SOLID STATE LOGIC LAUNCHES NEW L100 LIVE CONSOLE

L100 delivers the incredible SSL Live technology and audio performance to a new range of users that previously might not have been able to specify SSL Live.”

SSL Live L100.jpeg

OXFORD, ENGLANDSolid State Logic is pleased to announce the release of the L100 live console - the newest member of the SSL Live console range. L100 provides a physically smaller premium solution for customers who prioritise outstanding sonic performance in space restricted installations, for sub-mix positions or corporate production.

SSL Live consoles have earned their place on international arena tours, at festivals, and in prestigious installations and houses of worship around the world, gaining a reputation for superior sonic performance, fast and flexible workflow, comprehensive network-ready connectivity, and stalwart reliability. This new entry features the same high headroom, low latency SSL Tempest Audio Engine as the other SSL Live consoles, guaranteed showfile compatibility across the range, and all of the same I/O options, including SSL SuperAnalogue stageboxes (over MADI or Dante), local analogue and digital I/O, and Blacklight.

L100 sets itself apart with its compact, 12 + 2 fader configuration frame, while retaining the same fast access layer / bank switching and Super-Q technology to ensure no channel, group, aux, VCA, or master is ever far away from the engineer's fingers. Users who require more faders can expand the L100 with the addition of SSL’s new Remote Tile and more screen space can be added via an external touchscreen and the addition of tablet control.

The 17” multi-gesture touchscreen gives access to all of the consoles’ functions, and combines with Quick Controls in the central Fader tile to provide intuitive, immediate hands-on hardware control. The integrated tablet device stand combines with newly released version of SSL’s TaCo tablet control application functionality to offer an additional control interface for channel or Effects Rack processing. The Master Tile also provides Mute Group, Solo/Talkback, Assignable keys, and Automation controls.

96 fully-processed paths provide ample capacity for small- to mid-sized live productions, and its flexible architecture means it can be configured with up to 64 input channels, 36 aux sends, 12 stem groups, 12 VCAs, and four masters. An additional 4 x 32 input, 12-ouput matrix is always available.

Every L100 path features a complete range of channel processing configurable in any order, including EQ, dynamics, tube emulation, delay, all-pass filter, and two insert points. The console's internal FX rack provides everything else, with a large suite of SSL FX, for up to 24 instances.

The SSL SOLSA PC app can be used for online control and offline editing and the SSL Live TaCo (Tablet Control) mix app provides wireless tablet control of SSL Live consoles from iPad and Android devices.

Antony David, SSL's Managing Director, comments: "The launch of the L100 will deliver the incredible SSL Live audio performance and technology to a whole new range of users that previously might not have been able to specify SSL Live. Solid State Logic does not compromise its sonic integrity and build-values for anyone, so to be able to offer L100 at a very competitive price point is fantastic news.

The Solid State Logic L100 live console is available now.

SSL LIVE EXPANDED WITH NEW REMOTE TILE AND V4.7 SOFTWARE

SSL Live Remote Tile and SOLSA Touchscreen.jpeg

OXFORD, ENGLANDSolid State Logic is pleased to announce important enhancements to its Live console range with the launch of the new Remote Tile hardware, and V4.7 software. The software update - free to all SSL Live users - includes an upgrade to SSL's acclaimed Super Query workflow, enhanced TaCo (remote tablet control) features, a new Transfer Function Analyser Tool and Auto Pan effect, and support for external touch screen control.

The new 12-fader SSL Remote Tile provides a simple way to add additional faders to any SSL Live console, or to a PC running the SSL SOLSA control and configuration application. The Remote Tile is identical to the built-in Live console tiles, incorporating touch sensitive 100mm motorised faders, solo/mute, Query, and Select buttons, quick controls, individual channel LCD displays, and a complete set of tile navigation buttons. Up to two Remote Tiles (24 faders total) can be connected to any SSL Live console or SOLSA PC via USB.

In addition to the Remote Tile, V4.7 software for SSL Live extends primary control even further with external (SSL supplied) Touch Screen support. Engineers can now have direct touchscreen control of their Overview and Automation screens without having to switch focus on the console's internal touch screen.

The new software also adds significant functionality to TaCo - the SSL Live Tablet Control system for Apple and Android tablets. The TaCo app's Engineer Mode now provides parameter control of all path processing (EQ, dynamics, panning, delay, all-pass filter), and all FX in the console’s internal FX rack. This new capability facilitates the use of TaCo as an integral control interface for L100 and L200 live consoles, for PA tuning and for artist personal monitoring and engineer on stage monitor applications.

SSL's Live console Super-Q technology - a marketing-leading set of fast forward and reverse query tools - becomes even more powerful in V4.7. Users can now query paths directly from the touchscreen, temporarily replace the Focus Fader with the queried path, and assign a single user key as a universal 'Clear Query' button.

A new Transfer Function Analyser tool can be deployed anywhere in the Live console's internal FX rack. Its primary purpose is for measuring acoustic spaces, but it can also be used to measure any audio system, from a loudspeaker to an outboard processor. The tool measures the fixed-point per octave transfer function and the impulse response of a system and can show Magnitude, Phase & Coherence, and Impulse Response on-screen.

A new Auto Pan is an automated panning effects unit with a variety of modulation controls and easy tempo link function. Auto Pan allows engineers to create engaging panning effects that are fully automated and highly customisable, with controls for Pan, Width, Rate, LFO Mode, LFO Reset (LFO phase adjust), Steps, and Smooth (Step crossfade control).

The New Solid State Logic Live V4.7 software, Remote Tile Hardware and External Touch Screens are available now.

SSL_Lorde_PhilipJHarvey_web.jpgSSL LIVE WINS PRAISE FROM LORDE TOUR

"I love the sound of that desk so much… I went with the SSL because I knew that was where I'd be happiest with the fidelity."

New Zealand – Singer, songwriter, and record producer Lorde has been out on her international Melodrama tour, which accompanies the new album of the same name. The show is also set to visit some of this Summer's biggest festivals, and front of House Engineer Philip J Harvey has been along for the ride, with the special honour of engineering on the first international tour on the road with the new L-Acoustics L-ISA Live multichannel immersive technology. To complement this, Harvey needed a console that could do justice to the band and L-ISA, so he chose SSL Live.

The stage set-up is relatively simple. An acoustic drum kit, guitar amp, and vocals are the main analogue sources, with two keyboard stations and triggered drum samples making up the rest. "It's a nice, quiet stage," says Harvey. "...As the majority of the inputs are the Keyboards, software synths, and playback... I have 34 inputs from stage, plus clicks, guides, and so on."

The L-Acoustics L-ISA Live uses multi-array ‘scene’ technology to distribute up to 96 objects (console channels) across the full width of the performance space in either ‘Wide’ or ‘Focussed’ deployments, depending on the show requirements. Object panning is taken care of by the L-ISA system, as is spatial configuration and 3D processing – using the L-ISA Room Engine. “The L-ISA goal is to widen the venue sweet spot by expanding the mix over the entire floor, using multiple hangs,” explains Harvey. “Each input is sent post-processing, post-fader into the L-ISA processor and each one shows up on the L-ISA controller as a dot that you can position as you want - like mixing via coordinates.

“The clarity you get with single source coming out of single point across the front of the stage is amazing.”

The SSL L500 Plus that Harvey uses at FOH was supplied by Firehouse Productions based in Las Vegas and New York. "I love the sound of that desk so much," he says. "I went with the SSL because I knew that was where I'd be happiest with the fidelity."

Harvey uses the SuperAnalogue preamps in the SSL stageboxes, shared between FOH and monitors to bring pristine audio back to the console input channels. Much of the processing is done in-line in those channels using the SSL's internal FX rack and a Waves MultiRack system, with the addition of a few stem groups for specific FX. He then balances the mix on the console, sending the post-fader channel and stem outputs directly to the L-ISA system processor, which takes care of panning, depth, and associated processing. Harvey: "There's no bussing at the console, which has turned my 23 years of knowledge on its head!"

Harvey has been constantly experimenting with the system and the SSL console combination since the tour began, and notes that working this way has focussed a lot of attention on the sheer quality of the sources, the signal path, and the processing - rather than architectural and operational details. "The clarity I'm getting is magnificent," he says. "Early on we did a show at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles with lots of invited audience. After the show, everybody asked how we'd got such an amazing sound in the Staples Centre."

Lorde has a relatively straight forward vocal chain because, as Harvey explains: "She is a strong singer and delivers a lot to work with." After the SSL Stageboxes, she has the channel EQ and dynamics, including the SSL De-esser, then onto a couple of choice Waves plug-ins, before returning to the console ready for direct output to the L-ISA processor.

Harvey also makes use of console delays for instruments, drums, and vocals: "Really, the most important thing about the console is the way it sounds. The pre-amps, the dynamics, the EQ. I particularly love the tube emulation on the compressor, especially with drums... Using the slow attack and fast release with the tube button in really makes the drums sing."
